Twenty Asian Hotels on The World’s 50 Best Hotels 51-100 List
The extended ranking published on 1 September 2026 places seven Japanese hotels between 51 and 100, led by Janu Tokyo and Park Hyatt Tokyo, with entries from Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, Hanoi and Bali.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels published its extended list, covering places 51 to 100, on 1 September 2026, two weeks before the main ranking was announced in Paris. Twenty of the fifty hotels are in Asia. The list is compiled from the votes of an academy of more than 800 anonymous hoteliers, journalists and frequent travellers, based on stays over a three-year period.
Japan: seven hotels, six of them in Tokyo and Osaka
Japan has the largest group. Janu Tokyo, Aman’s sister brand at Azabudai Hills, is the highest at No.52, followed by Park Hyatt Tokyo at No.53, in the first full year after its renovation. The Okura Tokyo is No.69, Palace Hotel Tokyo No.73 and Hoshinoya Tokyo No.85.
Outside the capital, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is No.79 and Waldorf Astoria Osaka, which opened in 2025, enters at No.89. Several of the same hotels also hold the top rating in the Michelin Keys for Japan, announced later the same month. Our guide to Tokyo’s hotels by district places the five Tokyo addresses on the map.
Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China
Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is No.59 and Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong No.86. They join Rosewood Hong Kong, which leads the main list. Wynn Palace in Macau is No.96.
Mainland China has two entries: Mandarin Oriental Shenzhen at No.90 and The Peninsula Shanghai at No.99. The small number, for a country with so many accomplished hotels, reflects the make-up of the voting academy and the pattern of international travel more than the quality on the ground.
South-East Asia and Sri Lanka
Mandapa, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve on the Ayung River near Ubud, is No.61. Rosewood Bangkok is No.70, in a year in which Bangkok placed three hotels in the top ten of the main list, as we reported in Capella Bangkok No.2. Amangalla, in the 17th-century fort of Galle in Sri Lanka, is No.71. Capella Hanoi is No.81 and Capella Singapore, on Sentosa, No.97.
India
Two hotels in Rajasthan complete the Asian group: The Johri, a small hotel in a merchant’s house in the old city of Jaipur, at No.94, and The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur at No.98.
Reading the list
Ten of the fifty hotels on the extended list are independent, and the Asian entries range from a five-suite haveli to a resort of 1,700 rooms. Positions between 51 and 100 move a good deal from year to year and should be read as a shortlist. What stays constant is the weight of Tokyo, which with Bangkok and Hong Kong now accounts for a large share of the ranking’s Asian hotels.
