Rosewood Bangkok has opened on Ploenchit Road, in the capital’s central business and retail district, a short walk from Central Embassy and with direct access to Ploenchit BTS Skytrain station. The 30-storey standalone tower holds 159 rooms, including 34 suites and studios and three signature “houses” with private pools and terraces.

Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the building with Tandem Architects as executive architect. Its two connected structures take their form from the wai, the Thai greeting of hands pressed together, while water, sacred in Thai ritual, runs through the interior, most visibly in an indoor waterfall that drops ten storeys.

Interiors are by Celia Chu Design Associates, who worked with rattan-inspired weaves, rich woods and turquoise and emerald accents against a neutral palette. No two floors share the same layout: floorplates range from one to twelve rooms, and entry-level Deluxe Rooms start at 42 square metres with a separate living area. Artworks include pieces by Preecha Thaothong, Pinaree Sanpitak and Torlarp Larpjaroensook, and a metal sculpture by Jiandyin at the entrance spells out “wai” in ancient Thai script.

The signature restaurant, Nan Bei, serves Southern Chinese seafood and Peking duck from open kitchens, under a ceiling installation of 600 illuminated birds drawn from the folktale of the Weaver Girl and the Cowherd. Lakorn European Brasserie handles all-day dining, and G&O was presented as the first upscale organic café in a Bangkok hotel.

On the 30th floor, Lennon’s is a speakeasy entered through a hidden door among the records, with a collection of 6,000 vinyl LPs, vintage spirits from the 1940s to the 1970s and a private cigar lounge. Sense, A Rosewood Spa takes up the entire sixth floor, with treatments that draw on Thai healing traditions and products from EviDenS de Beauté and Maison Caulières.

“Rosewood Bangkok exemplifies a perfect marriage of destination and Rosewood’s core concept of a modern ultra-luxury hotel experience,” said Sonia Cheng, chief executive officer of Rosewood Hotel Group. Details are on the hotel’s website, and more on the city is in our Bangkok guide.
