Where to Stay in Phuket: Amanpuri, Rosewood and Banyan Tree Veya on the West Coast
Phuket's west coast by atmosphere: a private headland at Amanpuri, a cove at Rosewood Phuket and the Laguna wellbeing of Banyan Tree Veya, with seasons explained.
Phuket is a long coastline of beaches that have little in common, and the best luxury stays here are chosen by the cove they sit in. Quiet or lively, secluded or social, the character of the bay matters more than the name on the door.
Reading the west coast
The west coast is where the island’s best beaches face the Andaman Sea, and each one has a distinct mood. Kamala is a quiet former fishing village with a few luxury hotels. Bang Tao is broader, with white sand and large resorts. Patong is the party hub, and Kata is lively but family-friendly. Phuket Old Town is the place for architecture, cafés and a break from the beach. The high-end resorts mostly sit on the quieter headlands and coves between the busy beaches.
Seasons also shape the choice. Roughly November to April the sea is calm and the weather reliable; from May to October the monsoon brings short showers and, on west-coast beaches, large waves and strong currents. September and October are the wettest. Red flags on the beach mean it is not safe to swim, and a resort with a good pool and spa is worth more in the green season than a long beach.
The original headland
Amanpuri sits on its own peninsula above Pansea Beach, with pavilions inspired by Ayutthayan architecture, and its appeal is privacy: a place where the day is arranged around you. It is the one to choose if seclusion matters more than variety.
Two others offer a different mood. Rosewood Phuket has pool pavilions and villas on a secluded cove at Emerald Bay and the first Asaya wellness centre; Banyan Tree Veya Phuket is a small villa resort at Laguna built around movement, rest and mindfulness.
Combining Phuket
Phuket pairs well with a city stay or a retreat on the mainland. For a structured programme see Thailand’s wellness retreats; for the capital, where to stay in Bangkok.
