Amanpuri
Pansea Beach, west coast of Phuket, Phuket, Thailand
The original Aman: pavilions and private villas on a headland above Pansea Beach, designed by Ed Tuttle and opened in 1988.
Why we recommend it
Amanpuri is where the modern Asian resort began. The villa as the unit of accommodation, the restrained reference to local architecture, the dark pool and the absence of a lobby, desks and signs were novelties in 1988 and are conventions now. Staying here is a way of seeing the original, which is told in full in our history of the first Aman.
It is not the newest resort on the island, but it has been looked after: the closure of 2026 was described as enhancements, not a reinvention. The pavilions suit couples, the villas suit families and groups who want their own pool and staff.
Location
The resort stands on a private peninsula above Pansea Beach, on the west coast of Phuket, facing the Andaman Sea. Pavilions and villas are spread over the hillside and linked by raised walkways and steps, so guests should expect some climbing. Phuket has an international airport; the islands of Phang Nga Bay are reached by the resort's own boats.
