Bangkok and Thailand Wellness: RAKxa, Chiva-Som, Kamalaya and Thai Massage
How to choose among Thailand's serious wellness retreats, from RAKxa near Bangkok to Chiva-Som, Kamalaya and Amanpuri, and where Thai massage fits.

Thailand’s wellness retreats differ less in what they offer than in what they believe. The useful question is not which has the best spa, but which philosophy suits the week you have in mind: clinical, contemplative, private or simply stylish.
A clinical reset near the capital
The most unexpected of the great retreats sits within reach of Bangkok. RAKxa Integrative Wellness occupies a protected, green island in the Chao Phraya River, and works from data: blood work and genetic testing, with doctors working alongside practitioners of Thai and Chinese medicine. It suits people who want their instincts confirmed by results, and who prefer a shorter stay.
For a more traditional city stay, Aman Nai Lert Bangkok has a spa and a medical wellness clinic in a private garden, a calm base in the city.
Structure, or stillness
Hua Hin’s Chiva-Som, open since 1995, is the benchmark for the structured retreat: a beachfront property where daily treatments, consultations and activities are set out for you, and where the discipline is part of the appeal. It is the right choice for a reset with a medical edge.
Kamalaya on Koh Samui takes the opposite approach. It is built into a hillside around a cave once used by wandering monks, and its programmes draw on Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda and Western naturopathy. Guests are encouraged to put their phones away in shared spaces, and the week feels contemplative where Chiva-Som’s feels exact.
Privacy as the treatment
At Amanpuri, on its own peninsula above Pansea Beach in Phuket, the programme is tailored and the main luxury is seclusion. Its Immersions can be organised around stress, weight, detox or recovery, and the pavilions take their lines from Ayutthayan architecture. Phuket also has more design-led, lifestyle-oriented retreats; read where to stay in Phuket to choose a coast.
Thai massage, properly understood
Whatever the retreat, you will meet Nuad Thai. UNESCO added traditional Thai massage to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2019. It is a manual therapy that grew out of village self-care and uses hands, elbows, knees and feet, sometimes with herbal compresses, to work along the body’s energy lines. It is quite different from the oil massage most visitors expect, and is the form to look for at a good spa.
Before and after
Retreats are easy to pair with a city stay. For a few nights in Bangkok before or after, see where to stay in Bangkok.
