The MICHELIN Guide unveiled its first selection for Hangzhou on 31 May 2023. The inaugural edition covered 51 establishments, with one Michelin star for six restaurants, 12 Bib Gourmand addresses and two special awards.

Local cooking shaped the list. Four of the six starred restaurants focus on Zhejiang or wider Jiangnan cuisine: Guiyu, which serves Zhejiang classics; Jie Xiang Lou, which applies modern Western techniques to Jiangnan dishes; Jin Sha, which gives Zhejiang classics modern twists in a lakeside luxury hotel setting of ponds and gardens; and Longjing Manor, which has eight private dining rooms set in extensive gardens.

The other two stars went to Ambré Ciel, a French restaurant with Chinese touches, and Xin Rong Ji, whose Hangzhou branch serves Taizhou cooking at Xixi National Wetland Park. The group’s Beijing restaurant received three stars in the Michelin Guide Beijing 2020 selection.

The 12 Bib Gourmand restaurants span Hangzhou cuisine, noodles, vegetarian food and dim sum. The MICHELIN Sommelier Award went to Skylar Ye of Wild Yeast, and the MICHELIN Service Award to Mengping Li, head waitress at Guiyu.

The guide summed up the city this way: “Both the quantity and quality of restaurants in Hangzhou are on the rise. With the local culinary style of Zhejiang at its heart, the city offers a dazzling variety to cater to different tastes.” For more on where to stay and eat, see our Hangzhou guide.
