Sézanne Named No.1 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024

Daniel Calvert's French restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi led the ranking announced in Seoul on 26 March 2024.

Sézanne, the French restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi, was named The Best Restaurant in Asia at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024 awards, held in Seoul on 26 March 2024. It had been No.2 the previous year. The restaurant opened in 2021 and is led by Daniel Calvert, a British chef who trained in London, New York and Paris and made his name at Belon in Hong Kong before moving to Japan.

Calvert’s cooking is French in technique and structure and Japanese in its ingredients, which he sources from producers across the country, and it is marked by precision more than by display. The dining room, designed by André Fu, seats few guests around an open kitchen. The 50 Best organisation described the food as modern classics executed with expert precision. Later the same year the restaurant was promoted to three Michelin stars.

The ceremony was the first to be held in Seoul, with the support of the Korean ministry of agriculture and food and the city government. Singapore had the largest number of restaurants on the list, with nine, and 19 cities were represented in all. There were eight new entries, the highest of them Seroja in Singapore, at No.31.

Wing, Vicky Cheng’s Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong, was the highest climber, rising 32 places to No.5. Sung Anh of Mosu in Seoul received the Chefs’ Choice Award, voted by the chefs on the list. Nusara in Bangkok won the Art of Hospitality Award and Haoma, also in Bangkok, the Sustainable Restaurant Award. Mineko Kato of Faro in Tokyo was named best pastry chef and Kevin Lu of Logy in Taipei best sommelier.

The result returned the title to Tokyo for the second time in three years, after Den in 2022, and it was the first time a restaurant in a hotel had led the ranking since its early years. The following year the top position went to Gaggan in Bangkok.

Sézanne is on the seventh floor of the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi, beside Tokyo station. Reservations open in advance and are taken quickly.
