Dinner on a working rice farm

Begawan Biji is an open-air pavilion restaurant in Payangan, about 20 minutes from downtown Ubud, overlooking rice fields. It sits on a farm practising regenerative rice growing and reviving Mansur heritage rice within Bali’s subak irrigation system, so the menu is tied to the land around it.

The Honeycombers lists dishes such as smoked barramundi gohu, organic black pork chop rica and egg drop moringa, and says the menu changes with the season. Dining supports the Begawan Foundation, which works on community development, regenerative farming and conservation of the endangered Balinese starling.

The farm also hosts half-day cooking experiences, where guests pick vegetables and herbs and finish with a two-course lunch. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Sunday, and menus change, so dishes here are examples.
