Hong Kong’s best hotels are, to an unusual degree, the work of named designers. Reading the city through its interiors, from restraint to maximalism, explains why a stay here feels so distinct from one in Singapore or Tokyo.

The quiet school: André Fu

André Fu is the designer most associated with Hong Kong’s idea of calm. The Upper House, above Pacific Place in Admiralty, is the clearest statement: bamboo, timber, limestone and marble in a brown, hushed palette, a glass-walled lobby leading to an escalator that glows red like a torii gate, and hundreds of commissioned artworks. It is a hotel that argues for subtraction.

Fu also designed The St. Regis Hong Kong in Wan Chai, a curated, residential take on the mansion, so the two are a useful comparison between a minimalist and a more domestic version of the same hand.

Old towers, new rooms

The Murray is architecture before it is interior. Foster + Partners converted a 1969 government office tower on the edge of Hong Kong Park, keeping the white grid facade, the recessed windows designed to cut the subtropical sun, and the arches at the base, and opening the site to the street with a garden.

Mandarin Oriental, The Landmark, is the opposite instinct. Reopened on 1 June 2026 after a redesign by Joyce Wang, it draws on the grand residences of old Hong Kong, with terracotta and deep green tones, a curved stone staircase and a mansion-style foyer. The Landmark shows how a fresh scheme can transform a familiar address.

Across the harbour

Regent Hong Kong was redesigned by Chi Wing Lo, with modern design and nostalgic touches, and sits on the Kowloon waterfront. At Victoria Dockside, Rosewood Hong Kong has a tower by Kohn Pedersen Fox and stately interiors of lacquer and silk, a deliberately theatrical contrast to the minimalism across the water.

Back on the island, The Hari in Wan Chai, with interiors by Tara Bernerd, is the more social, contemporary option.

Choosing

Choose The Upper House or The Murray for calm close to Central, and the Kowloon hotels for the harbour. For the district view, see Where to Stay in Hong Kong.
