Chongqing

Chongqing is one of the most spectacular cities in China. Built across steep hills at the meeting of two great rivers, it layers roads, bridges, monorails and towers in ways that feel almost cinematic, especially at night.

It is also the capital of hotpot, the fiery, numbing broth that has become one of China's most beloved ways of eating, and a gateway to Yangtze River cruises.

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are the most comfortable seasons. Summers are extremely hot, and the city is often misty in winter.

Chongqing's rail transit network includes monorail lines that run through buildings and along the hillsides. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely used, and the Yangtze River cable car offers a memorable crossing. Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport is linked to the city by metro. High-speed trains reach Chengdu in around one to two hours.

Raffles Chongqing occupies Raffles City at the tip of the peninsula where the two rivers meet. Niccolo Chongqing offers high-rise views, and Regent Chongqing sits on the Jiangbeizui waterfront.

Hotpot is essential, from neighbourhood restaurants to large, busy institutions; spice levels and broths can usually be chosen. Chongqing noodles, xiao mian, are the classic breakfast, and spicy dishes such as laziji, chicken with dried chillies, are local signatures.

Hongyadong's stilted buildings are most striking after dark. Ciqikou ancient town, the Three Gorges Museum and the Eling Park viewpoints are worth a visit, as is a ride on the Yangtze River cable car. The Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, make a rewarding day trip.

The currency is the renminbi (yuan), and mobile payments dominate. The terrain is steep, so comfortable shoes are essential. Check current visa rules before travel.
