Kahala
Counter cooking in Sonezaki Shinchi from a chef who has run the kitchen for more than fifty years; two Michelin stars.
The Restaurant
Kahala is a counter restaurant on the second floor of a building in Sonezaki Shinchi, run for more than fifty years by chef Yoshifumi Mori, who still does much of the preparation himself. The Michelin Guide’s inspectors describe a cook who never stops refining: he developed a seasoning of rice flour and salt that dissolves like snow, makes his own wine and grows his own rice.
He also travels across Japan to find lesser-known ingredients and bring them to a wider audience, work the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has honoured. The inspectors compare his approach to a steel plate polished until it gleams.
Good to Know
Kahala holds two Michelin stars in the 2026 guide and sits in the top price band. It serves dinner only, in two seatings, and is closed on Thursdays and Sundays. For the wider picture of eating in the city, see Osaka.
