Welcome Seafood Restaurant
A seafood restaurant at Asia City in Kota Kinabalu with live tanks, a Muslim-friendly menu and long weekend queues.
The Restaurant
Welcome Seafood has three branches in Kota Kinabalu, and the one at Asia City stretches across several shop lots, announced by seafood-themed lamp posts. Live fish are kept in aquariums out front. Free Malaysia Today’s reviewer calls it one of the best seafood restaurants in the city, popular with locals and visitors, and notes that the menu is Muslim-friendly. It opens from noon to 11 pm daily.
The appeal is fresh seafood, bold flavours and fair prices rather than refinement.
Dishes
The reviewer recommends sambal-stir-fried sayur manis, a leafy Sabah green; deep-fried squid rings; dry butter prawns coated in buttery floss; and deep-fried soft-shell crab, which can be eaten whole. Others include a spicy Szechuan seafood soup, steamed sea bass in a spicy-sweet special sauce, and steamed sea snails eaten with a toothpick and first dipped in Thousand Island sauce.
Expect a wait at weekends. The Szechuan soup is very spicy, the sea snails may be unfamiliar to first-timers, and the reviewer adds that sayur manis should always be cooked, never eaten raw. See the Borneo destination for more on eating in Sabah.
