Fatt Kee Seafood Restaurant
A decades-old corner stall in Kota Kinabalu known for fish noodle soup in tomato or tom yam broth, eaten outdoors.
The Restaurant
Fatt Kee has been a fixture in Kota Kinabalu for as long as locals can remember, according to Free Malaysia Today, and photographs of actors, tycoons, politicians and athletes line one wall. It occupies a corner lot in Taman Far East facing a busy road. There are no indoor tables, so diners eat at tables on the walkways, and the queues are long on weekends and holidays. It is open from 7 am to 11 pm.
The kitchen is pork-free, and the broths are built on fresh fish.
The Fish Noodle Soup
The signature is fish noodle soup in either a sour tomato broth that suits the seafood or a spicy tom yam, with kolo mee, kway teow or bee hoon. Each bowl includes a piece of fish skin that is slimy but chewy, and regulars credit it for the soup’s appeal. Fish balls, bean curd, sea snails and jellyfish are available as extras, and a braised fish head is offered.
The reviewer found the ingredients fresh and the fish portions generous, but also thought the broths were sometimes too salty and that the kolo mee’s dark sauce would benefit from fried onions. The kway teow was springy and took up the soup well. See the Borneo destination for wider context.
