Ưu Đàm
A vegetarian restaurant on Nguyễn Du Street, run by Đỗ Thu Hà since 2015; a Bib Gourmand.
Vegetables without imitation
Ưu Đàm Chay is a strictly vegetarian restaurant at 55 Nguyễn Du Street, run since 2015 by Đỗ Thu Hà, and was described by Viet Nam News as the country’s only vegetarian restaurant to receive a Bib Gourmand. Hà prefers to let ingredients stand on their own rather than imitate meat, and uses byproducts across the menu to reduce waste.
A reviewer tasting eight dishes recalled a pumpkin soup with gnocchi served in a hollowed pumpkin, crispy rice cake with a sweet-sharp corn sauce, pineapple stuffed with fried rice and macadamias, a royal lotus salad and a grilled durian crème brûlée. The reviewer found the dishes varied and well executed, and the meal light rather than heavy, but thought the sauce on the miniature tacos too generous and warned that unfamiliar ingredients mean diners may need guidance.
The interior uses wood reclaimed from old temples, with a zen feel. Menus change, so confirm the dishes.
