Tầm Vị

A mother-and-daughter kitchen serving Northern Vietnamese home cooking in a wooden ancestral house, one Michelin star.

Home cooking, with a star

Tầm Vị is run by a mother and daughter with no formal culinary training, and opened in 2019 in a wooden ancestral house on a quiet street in Ba Đình, away from the busier Nguyễn Thái Học. It earned a Michelin star in 2023, which one review credited to cooking ‘like a mother to their children’.

The cooking is seasonal Northern Vietnamese, based on family recipes, with no trendy techniques and no elaborate plating. Signature dishes have changed little since opening: fried tofu with spring onions, clay-pot fish braised in fish sauce with peppercorns, ginger and lemongrass, and fried pork rinds with tomato sauce. Desserts follow the weather, with iced longan and lotus soup in summer and warm ginger syrup with black sesame dumplings in winter.

The house is calm, with the scent of incense; there is no wine list, but guests may bring their own. Reservations are essential and weekends book weeks ahead. Menus change with the season.
