Capella Kyoto

Miyagawa-cho, Kyoto, Japan

Capella's first hotel in Japan: 89 rooms by Kengo Kuma in the Miyagawa-cho geiko district, beside Kennin-ji.

  • Opened March 2026

Why we recommend it

Few new hotels in Kyoto are as closely tied to their neighbourhood. The project includes the restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo, the theatre where the district's geiko and maiko give their annual dance performances, so the hotel shares a block with a working institution rather than merely standing near one.

The building keeps to the scale of the surrounding townhouses, the onsen suites and spa bring hot-spring bathing into the city centre, and the kitchen partnership with SingleThread gives the dining a serious identity of its own. See our report on the opening and Kyoto's decade of new hotels.

Location

The hotel is in Miyagawa-cho, on the east bank of the Kamo River, a few steps from Kennin-ji, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, and next to Gion.
