Why we recommend it

Tohoku is the least visited part of Honshu, and for travellers who know Tokyo and Kyoto it is the logical next region. Azuma Farm Koiwai gives it a hotel to travel for. The stay is organised around a real working farm, with its Meiji-era buildings, its forests and its dairy, and the architecture is made from the farm's own timber.

The same circle's first inn, Azumi Setoda, showed how the approach works: local materials, local craft and very little decoration. Here it is applied to the north, with horse riding on the farm, visits to the workshops that make Nambu ironware in Morioka, and saunas in the trees in place of the usual bath.

Location

Koiwai Farm lies west of Morioka, in Iwate prefecture, at the foot of Mount Iwate. Morioka is two hours and 20 minutes from Tokyo by Tohoku Shinkansen, and the farm is a 25-minute transfer from the station. The Sanriku coast is about two hours to the east.
