Why we recommend it
Amanyangyun is one of the most unusual hotels in China. Its story began with a project to save ancient camphor trees and historic houses threatened by a dam in Jiangxi; both were moved to a forested site outside central Shanghai, where the houses were carefully reconstructed.
The result is a retreat of great calm, where restored antique dwellings sit alongside contemporary villas, and where the pace of the city feels far away.
Location
The resort is in Minhang district, south-west of central Shanghai. The Bund and the former French Concession are roughly an hour away by car, depending on traffic, making it best suited to longer, slower stays.
