Marriott International announced on 13 October 2020 that The Tokyo Edition, Toranomon would open on 20 October, the first of two Edition hotels planned for the city and the brand’s debut in Japan. The hotel occupies floors 31 to 36 of Tokyo World Gate, a 38-storey, 180-metre tower in Toranomon developed by Mori Trust.

The interiors are the work of Kengo Kuma, architect of the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, in collaboration with Edition creator Ian Schrager. The scheme takes its cue from the central courtyard of Buddhist temple architecture, using walnut, oak, bronze, travertine, silk and yamato-bari wood cladding in a palette of black, blue and jade.

“I have always had a spiritual connection with the approach and aesthetics of Japan. Their rationality, their simplicity, and their restraint has been the foundation of everything I’ve done,” Schrager said in the announcement.

There are 206 rooms, including 22 suites, several with private terraces and all facing Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Bay. Guest rooms are finished in white oak, light grey, ivory and silver textiles.

Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens oversees the food, in his first Japanese project. Venues include The Blue Room for all-day dining, The Jade Room for Japanese cuisine, and a Garden Terrace sky garden planted with more than 500 plants from 25 species. The Gold Bar at Edition sits at street level, with a Lobby Bar upstairs.

Facilities include a spa using Japanese products, a lap pool and jacuzzi under a natural skylight, a 24-hour gym and four meeting studios. The second property, The Tokyo Edition, Ginza, was announced in the same release. Explore more of the capital in our Tokyo guide.
