The hotel stands in Jing’an district on Weihai Road, in the building previously occupied by a Four Seasons, and overlooks Zhangyuan, a restored complex of shikumen stone-gate townhouses now converted into luxury retail.
There are 186 rooms, 94 of them suites. Entry-level rooms measure about 39 square metres and include a lounge area, walk-in wardrobe and bar nook, while the Penthouse Suite King on the 37th floor covers roughly 244 square metres, with a marble bathroom and an elliptical bath.
Interior designer Ju Bin combined traditional Shanghai references with hewn stone, timber marquetry, rattan and paper louvres. Arrival is through a water wall, cobblestone paving and a barrel-vaulted rattan ceiling, and the lobby is anchored by “Gathering”, a tree more than five metres tall by artist Oscar Wang, with leaves of stainless steel and Jingdezhen ceramic.
The Chinese restaurant, 500 Weihai Road, is led by chef de cuisine Scott Bao, formerly of 28 Hubin Road. Garden Pavilion serves all-day dining, Chayan @ 5th is dedicated to afternoon tea and Secret Roof is a cocktail bar with open-air terraces. Spa Alila has five treatment rooms, a Turkish bath and a yoga room, and the hotel follows EarthCheck operating standards.
“At Alila Shanghai, tranquil moments of retreat are perfectly combined with vibrant cultural experiences,” said general manager Yap Jtwen. Other new addresses are listed in our Shanghai guide, and the full announcement is on the Hyatt newsroom.
