1 Hotel Tokyo Opens at the Top of Akasaka Trust Tower

The nature-led American brand made its Japanese debut on 5 March 2026 with 211 rooms on floors 38 to 43 of a new Mori Trust tower, with interiors by Crème.

1 Hotel Tokyo opened on 5 March 2026 in Akasaka. It is the first hotel in Japan for 1 Hotels, the brand founded by Barry Sternlicht around planted interiors, reclaimed materials and environmental standards. The hotel occupies floors 38 to 43 of Akasaka Trust Tower, a new skyscraper by the developer Mori Trust, and has 211 rooms, including 24 suites and three penthouses.

The design

The interiors are by Crème, the New York studio of Jun Aizaki, a Japanese-born designer. The brand’s usual vocabulary of raw timber, stone, moss and hanging plants has been adjusted for Tokyo. Ceilings are lined with wood that recalls bark, walls are finished in textured plaster, and a wall of Oya stone, the soft volcanic tuff that Frank Lloyd Wright used for the Imperial Hotel, refers to the stone ramparts of the Imperial Palace moat. Rooms use local craft and living plants, and look towards the palace gardens, Tokyo Tower or the western skyline.

The building has received the S rank under CASBEE, the highest level of Japan’s environmental rating system for buildings. In the hotel, the brand’s standard measures apply: filtered water stations in place of plastic bottles, water-saving systems and reclaimed materials.

Restaurants and bar

NiNi, the main restaurant, is led by chef Nikko Policarpio and combines the cooking of the French Riviera with Japanese produce, with much of the menu cooked in a charcoal oven. Spotted Stone, the bar, lists close to 100 Japanese craft gins, a category that has grown quickly over the past decade. Neighbors Café, at the base, serves coffee and food to take away.

Spa and pool

The spa is run with Bamford, the English organic brand. There is an indoor pool with an outdoor deck planted for pollinating insects, and a gym open at all hours.

Akasaka and the competition

Akasaka sits between the government district of Nagatacho and the nightlife of Roppongi. It has long been a district of business hotels, and the tower is part of a wider redevelopment that is changing its standing. The hotel is ten minutes by taxi from The Okura Tokyo and The Tokyo Edition, Toranomon, and its closest rival in spirit is Janu Tokyo at Azabudai Hills, which also places wellness and a younger, more social style ahead of formality.

The opening fell on the same day as that of The Imperial Hotel, Kyoto.
