Where to Stay in the Maldives: Four Island Resorts, Compared by Atoll

Choosing a Maldivian atoll before a resort: short transfers near Malé, wellness and design in Raa, and privacy in the far north, with four resorts as examples.

The Maldives is a choice of atoll more than a choice of hotel. Where you sleep decides how you arrive, how much daylight you must plan around and what you will find in the water, and the best resort is the one whose transfer you are willing to accept.

Close to Malé

The atolls near the capital are the practical gateway. North Malé has many resorts reachable by speedboat, which means you are less reliant on daylight and can manage a late arrival; South Malé is calmer and more residential, close to the transport hub. Both suit shorter stays of four or five nights.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is a large all-villa resort in South Malé Atoll, notable for 11 restaurants and bars, including one by Dave Pynt of Burnt Ends. Patina Maldives, in the Fari Islands in North Malé Atoll, has low modernist villas by Studio MK27 and a James Turrell Skyspace.

Further north

Raa Atoll is the atoll for art, design and wellness, usually reached by seaplane, which operates only in daylight and needs planning. Joali Being has pool villas on Bodufushi, where the well-being programme is the reason to come. In the far north, Soneva Secret is a small resort of villas, each with a private chef,.

Transfers, and what is in the water

A seaplane flight is not door to door: you clear immigration, transfer to the seaplane terminal and often wait, so the published flying time understates the journey. Domestic flights followed by a short boat ride are the alternative for the far atolls. Share your flight numbers with the resort, ask about late arrivals, and check the departure-day connection as carefully as the arrival.

For marine life, snorkelling with manta rays in Hanifaru Bay, in the Baa Atoll biosphere reserve, depends on the season, which typically runs from May to November, and on the gatherings that are never guaranteed. Check access rules with an official operator.
