Where to Stay in Niseko: A Guide to Hirafu, Hanazono and Niseko Village

Niseko by village: Hirafu for energy, Hanazono for quiet luxury, Niseko Village for resort convenience and Annupuri for powder and calm.

Niseko is a collection of villages on one mountain, and the choice of village decides the winter more than the choice of hotel.

Grand Hirafu, the beating heart

Hirafu is the busiest and most developed base, with an international feel, the widest choice of restaurants and bars and the liveliest nights. Lifts are within walking distance or a short shuttle ride, and it has easy links to the airport and Sapporo. It suits first-time visitors and anyone who wants to be at the centre of things.

Sansui Niseko is ski-in, ski-out beside the chairlifts, with two restaurants, a spa and an onsen.

Muwa Niseko has an infinity onsen and views of Mount Yotei, Skye Niseko has large rooms and a natural onsen, and in Upper Hirafu, Setsu Niseko ranges from studios to penthouses.

Hanazono, quiet luxury

Hanazono is a modern, upscale resort set apart from the crowds, with newer lifts, a beginner area and fewer people. Dining and nightlife are limited within the resort, so Hirafu is reached by a dedicated shuttle. It suits families and those who prefer a calmer hill. Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono stands at the foot of the ski area.

Niseko Village and Annupuri

Niseko Village is a self-contained resort, with ski-in, ski-out properties, hotels with their own restaurants, onsen and ski schools, and lifts to both beginner terrain and high-elevation expert runs. Distances within the village mean a vehicle is often needed. Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Japan, at the base of Mount Niseko Annupuri.

Annupuri, on the other side of the mountain, is quiet, forested and traditional, near Niseko Town and local onsen, with wide uncrowded slopes. It suits relaxed stays and skiers who put powder before nightlife, but you will need a car or taxi for dining.

Practical

Choose by the evening you want. Hirafu is the base if you want to walk to dinner; Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri trade that for calm. Season dates and lift operations change, so check each resort’s official website.
