Banyan Tree and Banyan Group: How a Phuket Resort Became a Hundred Properties
Ho Kwon Ping and Claire Chiang bought land in Bang Tao Bay in 1994. Thirty years later the group has opened its 100th property, in Singapore.
Banyan Tree was founded in 1994, when Ho Kwon Ping and his wife Claire Chiang bought land at Bang Tao Bay in Phuket and built the group’s first resort, Banyan Tree Phuket. The company, formerly Banyan Tree Holdings, now trades as Banyan Group.
The brands
The Angsana brand launched in 2000 with Angsana Bintan; Cassia and Dhawa followed in 2015, and HOMM was unveiled in 2022, with its first location in Phuket. In July 2023 the group operated 70 resorts and hotels, 63 spas, 64 retail galleries and three golf courses in 23 countries. On 26 November 2025 it opened Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree, its 100th property and the first in Singapore.
On OKYTO
In Phuket, the group’s newer resort is Banyan Tree Veya, which opened on the island. In Kyoto, Banyan Tree Higashiyama opened in 2024, and in Bali Buahan carries the name. The group’s Suzhou resort is covered in Banyan Tree Yangcheng Lake Announced, along with its page.
