Seoul’s Flagship Street: Gehry, Portzamparc and Dumas Compared
Louis Vuitton's curved glass by Frank Gehry, Dior's eleven white sails by Christian de Portzamparc and Hermès's courtyard house by Rena Dumas: three flagships in Seoul's Gangnam district.
Seoul’s luxury houses have commissioned some of their most ambitious buildings along Cheongdam-dong Avenue and nearby in Gangnam, and each reads differently.
Louis Vuitton: curved glass
Maison Seoul has an exterior by Frank Gehry, a curved glass structure inspired by the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and interiors by Peter Marino. The top floor is an exhibition space.
Dior: white sails
Maison Dior opened in June 2015 behind eleven white sails designed by Christian de Portzamparc, over six storeys, with a Dior Café on the top terrace.
Hermès: the courtyard
Hermès chose a different path at Dosan Park, a courtyard house with a double-skin glass façade, described in Hermès’s maisons in Asia.
Staying nearby
A hotel in the same part of the city is Andaz Seoul Gangnam.
