Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 Draws 91,500 Visitors
The fair ran from 27 to 29 March 2026 at the Convention and Exhibition Centre, with two new sectors, a five-year agreement with the government and a Shahzia Sikander commission on the M+ facade.
Art Basel Hong Kong closed on 29 March 2026 with a total attendance of 91,500. The fair ran for three public days at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, after two preview days on 25 and 26 March. Some 240 galleries took part.
What was new
Two sectors were added. Zero 10, devoted to digital art, was introduced at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2025 and made its first appearance in Asia. Echoes offered curated presentations by mid-sized galleries, a part of the trade that has been under the most pressure from rising costs. The fair also announced a five-year collaboration with Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, which secures its place in the city’s calendar, and a new network for collectors, Friends of Art Basel Hong Kong, linked to institutions in the region.
The MGM Discoveries Art Prize, in its second year, went to the artist Natsuko Uchino, presented by Galerie Allen.
The market
Dealers reported steady business. David Zwirner spoke of strong sales on the opening day and a high number of new collectors. Marc Payot of Hauser & Wirth said the gallery had placed works by Louise Bourgeois and George Condo with established collections on the first day. Representatives of more than 170 museums and foundations from 27 countries and territories attended.
The tone was one of consolidation. After several difficult years for the art trade, Hong Kong’s fair has kept its position as the main meeting point of the Asian market, even as Frieze Seoul has grown and Singapore and Tokyo have launched fairs of their own.
Across the harbour
As in previous years, the fair extended to West Kowloon. The facade of M+, which works as a screen visible from Hong Kong Island, showed a commission by the Pakistani-American artist Shahzia Sikander, presented with Art Basel and UBS. The Hong Kong Palace Museum, Tai Kwun and the auction houses’ new headquarters in Central all scheduled major exhibitions for the week.
For visitors
The next edition is set for 25 to 27 March 2027. Art week is the busiest of the year for hotels in Hong Kong. The Upper House in Admiralty is the closest of the city’s leading hotels to the fair; Rosewood Hong Kong is best placed for M+ and West Kowloon. Rooms for the week should be reserved months in advance.
