Why we recommend it

THE UPPER is the relaxed side of French dining in Marunouchi: a brasserie and bar high above the district, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, where the cooking is familiar and the mood convivial.

It works well for a lively lunch or an evening drink with a view, and as an easy alternative to a formal tasting menu near Tokyo Station.

THE UPPER is the easy-going face of French dining in Marunouchi: a brasserie and bar on the ninth and tenth floors of Marunouchi Terrace, a short walk from Tokyo Station. Rather than a tasting menu, it offers an à la carte list of classic French flavours in a brasserie setting, with a rooftop terrace that looks out over the towers of the business district. It was listed as a Selected restaurant, without a star, in the MICHELIN Guide Tokyo 2025.

The food

The menu draws on the regional repertoire of France. The MICHELIN Guide points to salade Lyonnaise, bouillabaisse and duck confit, the kind of dishes that define a good brasserie: generous, familiar and dependent on careful execution rather than novelty. A bar sits alongside the dining room, so the address works as well for a drink as for a full meal.

The room and the terrace

The restaurant spreads across two tiered spaces designed to recall a classic French brasserie, in a contemporary setting. The terrace is the draw on fine days, with wide views over the surrounding cityscape. For groups there is a fully private room for eight and a semi-private room for twelve, and the whole venue can be reserved for up to 150 guests.

Why OKYTO recommends it

Marunouchi has no shortage of formal dining, and THE UPPER fills a different need: a relaxed French lunch, a weekend evening on the terrace or a group dinner without the ceremony of a multi-course menu. English menus and English-speaking staff make it straightforward for visitors.

Food

The menu follows the brasserie tradition, with regional French favourites such as salade Lyonnaise, bouillabaisse and duck confit. The approach is everyday French dining rather than haute cuisine, in a contemporary setting.

Design

The restaurant occupies two tiered spaces on the 9th and 10th floors of Marunouchi Terrace. A spacious rooftop terrace is the highlight on fine days, with open views across the surrounding towers.

Service

THE UPPER serves lunch and dinner and welcomes groups, with outdoor dining on the terrace. Opening hours and menus change over time and are best confirmed with the restaurant before visiting.

Location

Marunouchi Terrace stands in the heart of Marunouchi, a few minutes’ walk from the Marunouchi North Exit of Tokyo Station and directly connected to Otemachi Station.
