Bibik’s Kitchen
Heirloom Nyonya recipes, served in three sizes in a George Town room full of the owner's porcelain and tiffin carriers.
A Peranakan dining room
Bibik’s Kitchen is at 73 Jalan Sri Bahari in George Town, Penang. Bibik is an honorific for older Peranakan women, and the room follows suit, with classic Nyonya motifs, glass cabinets of porcelain kamcheng jars and antique tiffin carriers from the owner’s own collection.
The cooking is built on the owner’s heirloom Peranakan recipes. Michelin notes that they run slightly less spicy than versions found elsewhere, and dishes come in three sizes, which makes it easy to order widely.
What to order
Michelin points to jiu hu char, yam bean stir-fried with shredded dried cuttlefish, and loh bak, five-spice pork rolled and deep-fried. Reviewing the restaurant in May 2026, Daniel Food Diary called the jiu hu char the best dish of the meal: the jicama braised with cuttlefish and mushrooms but still crunchy, eaten wrapped in lettuce with sambal belacan.
The same review praised a pork dish cooked with cincalok, the fermented shrimp condiment, a dry ayam rendang heavy with lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime, and a kerabu of sliced rose apple dressed with lime, sugar and bird’s eye chilli. The otak-otak was the one dish that disappointed. The wider menu runs to ayam pongteh, tau ewe bak, sambal petai and, at market price, gulai tumis and assam pedas.
Michelin lists Bibik’s Kitchen as a Bib Gourmand in its Kuala Lumpur and Penang selection, and the reviewer summed up the room as feeling “almost like visiting someone’s home.”
