Why we recommend it
Gyeongju is visited for its Silla tombs, temples and pagodas, and the choice of hotels is small. Lahan Select is the more contemporary of the two large lakeside properties: its interiors are fresh and bright, with a subtle Korean character, and the hotel has invested in things to do under its own roof, from a gallery of photography by regional artists to a grocery stocked for picnics by the lake.
It works particularly well for families. There are themed children’s rooms, a dedicated children’s lounge and two pools, and the roof garden is a good place to watch the sun set over the water. In spring the cherry trees around Bomun Lake are in blossom. For the town itself, see OKYTO’s guide to two days in Gyeongju, the old capital of Silla. Travellers who prefer an international brand have Hilton Gyeongju, on the same lake.
Rooms & Suites
Rooms are decorated in neutral tones, with dark wood, white linen and modern art, so that attention goes to the view through the full-height windows. The main categories are Deluxe and Family rooms, in double, twin and ondol (Korean floor-heated) versions, most with a balcony. Above them is a range of suites with separate sitting rooms, including corner, family and premium suites.
A small group of children’s rooms is designed around themes, among them a jungle camp, a racing room and a princess room.
Dining
There are two restaurants. Market 338, named after the hotel’s street number on Bomun-ro, serves European dishes, and The Plate is the buffet restaurant. The Lobby Lounge is the place for drinks and cocktails. Gyeongju Groceries, the hotel’s own food shop, sells gourmet items, snacks and picnic provisions.
For a meal in town, OKYTO’s Gyeongju pages include 987 Pizza, in the Hwangnidan-gil quarter, and Byeolchaeban, also in Gyeongju.
Wellness & Spa
The hotel has an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool, a sauna and a gym. Leisure facilities go beyond the usual: The Strike is a games area with bowling, Wonderland is the children’s lounge, and the Gyeongju Nine gallery holds regular photography exhibitions. The roof garden is open to guests and is also used for events.
Location
The hotel stands at 338 Bomun-ro on Bomun Lake, on the edge of historic Gyeongju. The main sights are a drive away: the burial mounds of Tumuli Park, Bulguksa Temple, Namsan and, further out, Yangdong Folk Village.
