Sail Raja Ampat on a private phinisi expedition
An archipelago of more than 1,500 islands at the heart of the Coral Triangle, explored by a hand-built Sulawesi schooner. The reefs are among the richest on earth; the boat sets the pace.
Expedition
Raja Ampat, “Four Kings”, lies off the north-western tip of New Guinea, in Southwest Papua. Four main islands, Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo, anchor an archipelago of more than 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals. It sits inside the Coral Triangle, the part of the Southeast Asian seas with the richest marine biodiversity on earth: more than 600 species of hard coral, about three-quarters of those known to science, and more than 1,700 species of reef fish.
What the experience is
The expedition is a charter aboard a phinisi, the Sulawesi schooner. The tradition of building these wooden vessels, centred on Tana Beru, Bira and Batu Licin in South Sulawesi, was inscribed by UNESCO on its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2017. Today many are fitted out as private yachts: a few cabins, a crew, a dive or snorkel deck, kayaks and a tender.
A route is built around what you want to see. Reefs and walls for diving and snorkelling, limestone islets and hidden lagoons, mangrove channels, village stops, and early-morning viewpoints. The advantage of a private boat is control of the itinerary and time: you reach quiet sites before day boats and leave when you wish.
Permits and conservation
Entry to the marine protected areas requires a Marine Park Entry Permit. The official biodiversity site lists IDR 1,000,000 for international visitors, valid for twelve months, with children under twelve exempt, and states that the revenue funds conservation, monitoring and patrols. A charter operator normally arranges it; carry proof of payment, since rangers conduct checks. Fees can change, so confirm before you travel.
Why OKYTO recommends it
Because it combines two things that are hard to find together: some of the planet’s most important marine habitat and a way of travelling that has its own heritage. Choose a charter that respects the park rules, and the expedition supports the reefs it comes to see.
