Cruise among the pine islets of Matsushima Bay

An hour's cruise among some 260 pine-covered islets, under an hour from Sendai.

Matsushima, in Miyagi Prefecture, means Pine Islands, and the bay holds about 260 pine-covered islets. A leisurely cruise of about an hour gives a close view of them, and a few small islands are linked by bridge. On shore, Zuiganji and Entsuin are the town’s notable sites, several hotels around the bay have hot springs, and Matsushima oysters are in season from October to March. The town is less than an hour from Sendai Station, so it works as a day trip.
