Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur Opens High in Merdeka 118
Malaysia's first Park Hyatt opened on 7 August 2025 with 252 rooms on levels 75 to 114 of the world's second-tallest building.
Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur opened on 7 August 2025 on the upper floors of Merdeka 118, the 118-storey tower that stands 678.9 metres high and is the second-tallest building in the world. The hotel occupies levels 75 to 114 and has 252 rooms and suites, which makes it one of the highest hotels anywhere, and the first Park Hyatt in Malaysia.
The tower was developed by PNB, the Malaysian state investment company, on a hill at the edge of the old city centre. It rises beside Stadium Merdeka, where the independence of Malaya was proclaimed in 1957; the word merdeka means independence, and the faceted glass of the tower is patterned on the triangular motifs of Malaysian songket weaving. The project includes the restoration of the stadium, a park, a mosque and a textile museum, as part of a wider regeneration of the historic quarter.
The hotel’s interiors, by G.A Group, take their references from the kampung house, the timber village house of the Malay peninsula: screens of perforated brass in batik patterns, timber and woven textures, in a palette of warm neutrals. Every room has floor-to-ceiling windows, and the suites add a living room, a dressing room and a study.
There are three restaurants and bars. Merdeka Grill serves prime cuts and seafood with preparation at the table. Park Lounge offers Malaysian dishes based on heritage recipes through the day, and Cacao Mixology & Chocolate is a bar built around chocolate, with live music in the evening. The wellness floor is on level 99, with a 30-metre infinity pool, a gym, a yoga studio and treatment suites.
Kuala Lumpur has not, until recently, been a city that travellers chose for its hotels, and prices have been low by regional standards. That is changing quickly. Park Hyatt’s opening is to be followed by Waldorf Astoria Kuala Lumpur, and the city now has a Michelin guide. The hotel has already begun to appear in OKYTO’s pages for its afternoon tea.
