Capella Taipei Opens as a Modern Mansion by André Fu

The group's first hotel in Taiwan opened in April 2025 with 86 rooms designed by André Fu as a modern mansion, six of them with private plunge pools.

Capella Taipei opened in April 2025 on Dunhua North Road, a tree-lined boulevard in the Songshan district of the Taiwanese capital. It is the first Capella in Taiwan and a small hotel by the standards of the city, with 86 rooms and suites in one of a pair of new glass towers.

The designer is André Fu, who conceived the hotel as a modern mansion, the house of a cultivated Taipei family, rather than as a hotel with a lobby. Guests are taken to the Living Room, a lounge on the 14th floor, to check in. The rooms, the smallest of which measure 48 square metres, have walls of pale timber and panels of hand-painted silk. Six rooms and suites open onto terraces with private plunge pools, an unusual thing in a city hotel, and the largest of them covers 270 square metres. A spiral staircase built from 800 blocks of hardwood links the public floors, and the art includes tapestries by the Taiwanese artist Lee Chen-Lin.

The hotel has five restaurants and bars. Rong Ju is the Chinese restaurant, serving refined Cantonese cooking. Ember 28 grills over charcoal, Mizue is a Japanese counter for sushi and sashimi, and Plume, in the lobby lounge, serves Taiwanese dishes through the day. Glasshouse, a venue on three levels with bars and live music, was to open after the hotel. There is a 30-metre outdoor pool, a spa and a gym.

Capella’s hotels are known for the role given to local culture, through staff called culturists who arrange introductions to craftspeople, temples, markets and food. In Taipei that means night markets and tea houses, the temples of Dadaocheng and the studios of a city whose design and food scenes have grown quickly.

Taipei has been short of hotels at this level, and Capella is the most significant arrival since Mandarin Oriental opened nearby in 2014. It came a year before the group’s first Japanese hotel, Capella Kyoto, and is the latest of André Fu’s hotels in the region, after Dusit Thani Bangkok and Waldorf Astoria Osaka. Elsewhere on the island, Hilton is preparing to open Signia in Tainan.
