Why we recommend it

Setsu answers the practical question of a Niseko ski holiday, which is how to house a family or a group for a week, without giving up the services of a hotel. The suites are apartments in all but name, yet there is a concierge, a ski concierge, an on-site rental shop, in-suite dining and a shuttle to the lifts.

The second argument is the table. Few hotels in the area gather as many serious restaurants under one roof, from a tempura counter to Edomae sushi and a chop house. The hotel was named Japan’s Best Ski Hotel at the 2025 World Ski Awards. Its arrival is covered in our report on Niseko’s winter of 2022-23, when Setsu, Park Hyatt and Chatrium opened their doors.

01

Rooms & Suites

Accommodation runs from studios through one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom suites to three- and four-bedroom penthouses. The development comprises 190 hotel residences, individually owned and let through the hotel, and all are fully furnished. The larger suites are intended for families and groups travelling together.

02

Dining

As of 2026 the hotel lists six venues. Méli Mélo (Yuki No Koe) is the all-day restaurant, with European-inspired cooking and local produce, and serves breakfast. Tempura Araki is an intimate tempura omakase counter under the direction of the Michelin-starred chef Araki. Shinonome Niseko serves an omakase of Hokkaido seafood in the Edomae style, and is the first sister restaurant of the Hokkaido-born chef Wataru Nakahara. Afuri, the Tokyo ramen house, offers ramen, small dishes and cocktails; Luke’s Alpine Club is a classic chop house; and the Lounge Bar by Park90 is the hotel’s bar.

For dinners elsewhere, OKYTO’s Niseko pages include Kamimura in Niseko and Satou in Kutchan.

03

Design

The building is the work of W Architects of Singapore with the Japanese practice Kume Sekkei, for the developer SC Global. It stands on an estate of about one hectare, planted with courtyard gardens. The guiding idea is Setsu Getsu Ka, snow, moon and flowers, the classical Japanese shorthand for the beauty of the seasons, and the interiors are hung with art from Hokkaido. At the 2021 PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards for Greater Niseko the project took the prizes for hotel condominium development, architectural design and interior design.

04

Wellness & Spa

The hotel describes its wellness centre as one of the largest in Grand Hirafu. The onsen has indoor and outdoor mineral-water pools and a sauna, and there are private onsen rooms for those who prefer to bathe alone or as a family. Rikka Spa offers treatments; there is a fully equipped gymnasium; and Studio En runs yoga and pilates classes, including reformer pilates.

05

Location

Setsu is in Hirafu, within Grand Hirafu, the largest of the four resorts that make up Niseko United. A ski shuttle links the hotel to the lifts, and a second shuttle runs to the town of Kutchan. The other bases of the area, including Hanazono, home of Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono, are set out in our guide to where to stay in Niseko. In the same village, Sansui Niseko is a smaller ski-in, ski-out alternative.
