Kikuya
A Kanazawa sushi counter that grew from six cramped seats to eight by the Sai River, and remains one of the city's hardest bookings.
A sushi counter by the Sai River
Kikuya (きく家) is a small sushi restaurant in Kanazawa. It opened in 2011 at a cramped counter where six guests sat shoulder to shoulder, and in 2020 moved to a larger room on the banks of the Sai River, south of Kenroku-en.
The new room is still intimate: an L-shaped counter of eight seats, with no private rooms. It sits away from the main train lines, so most guests arrive by taxi; the nearest stop is Nomachi on the Hokuriku Railway.
Omakase only
There is no à la carte. Dinner is a single omakase of sashimi and nigiri, served in the evening and by reservation only.
Kikuya appears in the 2021 Michelin Guide Hokuriku, and seats at the counter are famously hard to secure.
