Liu Yuan Pavilion
Shanghainese cooking on Lockhart Road in Wan Chai, with a Michelin star.
Shanghainese home cooking, taken seriously
Liu Yuan Pavilion is a Shanghainese restaurant on the third floor of The Broadway on Lockhart Road in Wan Chai, and it holds one Michelin star. One food writer called it a fantastic Shanghainese restaurant, and the strength of the menu is in the cold dishes and the pan-fried items rather than in showy banquet cooking.
Dishes a visitor reported included jellyfish with black vinegar, malantou (a wild green with bean curd) that is hard to source and labour-intensive, drunken chicken, pan-fried pork buns with rich juices, and a giant layered sesame bread. The same writer was less convinced by the eel with yellow chives, and preferred the river shrimp at some other Shanghainese restaurants, which is a useful reminder that the menu is uneven for some tastes.
The pan-fried eight-treasure rice is crisp on both sides and not overly sweet. Menus change, and this account dates from 2021, so check current dishes when booking.
