Why we recommend it
RAKxa is a destination retreat rather than a hotel with a spa. Guests follow personalised programmes of several days that combine medical diagnostics from VitalLife, a subsidiary of Bumrungrad International Hospital, with traditional Thai, Chinese and Ayurvedic therapies, a medical gym and an anti-inflammatory kitchen supplied by the retreat's own gardens.
What makes it unusual is the setting: garden and pool villas among old trees and waterways, within sight of Bangkok's skyline. It suits travellers who want a serious health programme without flying on to an island.
Location
The retreat is on Bang Krachao, a protected area of orchards and mangroves in a bend of the Chao Phraya, in Samut Prakan province. It is reached by car or by boat, about an hour from Bangkok's two airports.
