Why we recommend it

Kovalam is Kerala’s most developed stretch of coast, and Surya Samudra is the argument for staying just beyond it. The property occupies its own headland, with access to the beach below, and its buildings are old Keralan houses rather than a hotel block: carved timber, deep verandas and tiled roofs set among palms. The result has a sense of place that newer resorts on this coast have to manufacture.

It works equally as a beach stay and as a base for treatment. The spa is one of the larger ones on the southern coast, with programmes that can run to several weeks, and the retreat describes itself as an Ayurveda retreat first. Those considering a longer course should read our account of Ayurveda in Kerala and how a Panchakarma stay works. The cliffs make it less suited to families with very young children.

01

Rooms & Suites

The 31 rooms, two of them suites, are distributed across the hillside rather than gathered in one building. The heritage rooms occupy tharavads, the traditional timber family houses of Kerala, which the owners moved to the site and restored; the Heritage Premium rooms have verandas facing the sea and bathtubs set in walled outdoor gardens. The Rock Garden Rooms sit among the coconut groves, with outdoor sitting areas of 600 to 700 square feet and showers open to the sky.

02

Dining

Essence, on the clifftop, is the dinner restaurant, with a South-East Asian menu weighted towards Thai cooking and local seafood. Café Samsara, beside the pool, runs through the day with regional and international dishes, Malabar fish curry among them. Madira is the bar, on a sandy terrace facing the sea. The kitchen also arranges cooking classes and dinners on the beach. In Thiruvananthapuram itself, Villa Maya, the restaurant in Trivandrum, is the address on OKYTO’s list for an evening in the city.

03

Design

The character of the retreat comes from its relocated houses. Tharavads were the ancestral homes of Keralan families, built in timber with carved gables, pillared verandas and steep tiled roofs; here they have been reassembled on terraces down the slope and fitted with modern bathrooms and air conditioning. The landscape is left close to its natural state, with granite outcrops, coconut palms and paths between the houses, and the infinity pool is cut directly into the rock at the cliff edge.

04

Wellness & Spa

The Niraamaya spa covers 626 square metres and has eight treatment rooms. Ayurveda is the core of the menu, with Thai, Chinese and European therapies alongside, and month-long retreats can be arranged. Morning yoga takes place in a pavilion on the cliff. The pool overlooks the sea from the rock, and the beach lies below the headland. For context, see our note on following an Ayurvedic programme in Kerala and the OKYTO guide to Kerala for wellness and water.

Location

The retreat is at Pulinkudi, on the coast south of Kovalam in the far south of Kerala. Trivandrum International Airport and Trivandrum Central railway station are each about 40 minutes away by car. Within reach for a day are the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and the Napier Museum in Thiruvananthapuram, and the wooden Padmanabhapuram Palace, dating from the 16th century. Travellers who prefer an emptier coast at the other end of the state might compare Neeleshwar Hermitage, the thatched-cottage retreat in northern Kerala.
