Why we recommend it
Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing is the group's first hotel in Beijing, opened on 18 March 2019 on the top two floors of WF Central, a premium retail centre. With 73 rooms and suites it is one of the group's more intimate city hotels, yet its accommodation, from 55 to 260 square metres, is among the largest in the capital. Many rooms look towards the Forbidden City, which is also visible from the hotel's garden terrace.
Interiors are by Hirsch Bedner Associates, who blend contemporary residential comfort with classic Chinese touches, including four-poster beds inspired by those favoured by Qing dynasty princes. The hotel also carries commissioned pieces: a sculptural fish lamp in the lobby by Frank Gehry, a signature fan by Oscar-winning art director Tim Yip, restaurant logos by Hong Kong designer Alan Chan and uniforms by Vivienne Tam.

Dining centres on Mandarin Grill + Bar, a steakhouse designed by Adam Tihany, and Café Zi, an all-day restaurant serving Cantonese and regional Asian dishes. Both, together with MO Bar, the rooftop cocktail lounge, open onto the garden terrace.

The Mandarin Cake Shop and The Library, a tea lounge stocked with books on craft, complete the offer.

The Spa has four treatment suites, and the wellness floor adds a 25-metre skylit indoor lap pool, a steam room and a fitness centre.

Location
The hotel occupies the upper floors of WF Central, a premium retail centre at 269 Wangfujing Street in Dongcheng District, in the commercial heart of Beijing. The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the hutongs are a few minutes away.
