New Olympia
A small seafood restaurant a few minutes from Naoshima's port, where dinner is the day's local catch as sashimi, simmered and grilled fish.
A few minutes from the ferry
New Olympia (ニューおりんぴあ) is on a quiet street in Miyanoura, three or four minutes’ walk from the port on Naoshima, in the Seto Inland Sea. It opens for dinner only, and booking ahead is advised.
Uchi Japan describes it as run by a father and son. The room seats 22 between a counter, tables and tatami rooms, and the mood is calm rather than formal.
The day’s catch
The cooking is built on fish caught locally. The omakase course follows that day’s seafood through sashimi, nitsuke (fish simmered in sweetened soy) and salt-grilled fish; a generous sashimi platter is the other way in.
Uchi Japan names Spanish mackerel, amberjack and rainbow salmon among the fish served. Finding Naoshima, describing “simple, well-executed seafood prepared with care”, also saw fried octopus and fried chicken on the table.
