Why we recommend it
Skye is chosen first for position. It sits on the slopes of Grand Hirafu, so the skiing day begins and ends at the building, and a ski valet with full ski and snowboard rental, reserved for residents, removes the usual morning logistics. The rooms are large: these are apartments with stone and wood finishes, planned so that living rooms and bedrooms look to the mountains and the slopes.
It suits families and groups who want space and a kitchen but also an onsen, a spa and a restaurant downstairs. In summer the concierge arranges rafting, golf, trekking on Mount Yotei and e-bike tours. For how Hirafu compares with the other bases, see our guide to where to stay in Niseko, from Hirafu to Hanazono and Niseko Village.
Rooms & Suites
The hotel lists a Hotel Room, a Studio Room with Yotei view, one-bedroom suites, two-bedroom suites (including an east-view category), three- and four-bedroom suites and Penthouse Suites. The building holds 100 apartments, designed by the Australian practice Pike Withers in a monochrome, minimalist manner, with clean-lined furniture and hand-tufted rugs in charcoal and grey, and five penthouses by Wilson Associates.
The penthouses have three or four bedrooms, full living and dining rooms, kitchens, open fireplaces and heated outdoor balconies, each with a rotenburo, an open-air bath fed with mineral water from the mountain.
Dining
Kumo Restaurant serves Japanese cuisine at lunch and dinner. Skye Cafe Deli offers quick meals and items to take away. For an evening out, OKYTO’s Niseko pages include Kamimura in Niseko and Del Sole in Niseko.
Design
Wilson Associates designed the lobby, corridors, spa, cafe-deli, ski valet and penthouses, drawing on Japanese culture and the alpine setting. In the lobby a wall of raw split-cut stone stands behind the reception desk, set against dark metal, a textured slate floor, bamboo surfaces and vertical ceiling beams. The spa has a sculptural chandelier inspired by the mountains of Hokkaido, and its treatment rooms are lined with materials that recall tatami. The site lies within a national park.
Wellness & Spa
The onsen is reserved for hotel guests and free of charge to them; the hotel mentions both a shared onsen with sauna and a private onsen. The day spa was reported at its completion in 2019 to have the first float tank in Hokkaido. There is also a gym.
Location
Skye stands directly on the Grand Hirafu slopes. A free resort shuttle stops about two minutes away and runs to the Hanazono area, where Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono is located, and to the shops of Kutchan. Muwa Niseko, another ski-in, ski-out hotel in Grand Hirafu, has an address in the same block of Hirafu.
